When to stop

Citation searching can be a fascinating process, particularly when tracking
developments in a chosen area. However, it is remarkably easy to find oneself
following lines of investigation that are well beyond the scope of the original
research. It can also be a time consuming process, and the researcher needs
to be able to draw a halt to the proceedings, although, as more information
is uncovered as the research progresses, a return to citation searching may be
necessary. The signals for reaching the limits of a citation search are:
•  The works that are being retrieved have already been discovered in the
search
•  The works being discovered are becoming less and less relevant
